Why Is It Important to Get Gana Checked Before Marriage?
As per Dharma Shastra, in a person’s life, there are 16 Samskara or milestones, and marriage is one of the most significant Samskaras in them. That is why, people begin this significant event of their lives by Kundali Milan to ensure there is no fault in their stars that may lead to life-long crises between the two married couples.
A horoscope matching also known as Ashtakoot milan (Asht = 8, milan = matching) compares 8 categories of Koots of a person. These 8 koots are Varna, Vasya, Deena, Yoni, Maitri, Gan, Nadi and Bhakoot. These koots have a further 36 Gunas which are compared for a couple to check the compatibility between them.
About Gana Koot: The word Gana means a person’s behaviour temperament. It is basically a behavioural compatibility analysis for the couple.
How many types of Nakstra Gana are there?
रक्षोनरामरगणाः क्रमतो मघाहिर्वास्वन्द्र मूलवरुणानलतक्षराधाः।

As per this shloka, which is taken from the Muhurta Chintamani: There are 27 nakshatras and they belong to 3 classes: Dev who resides in Swarga, Manushya in Prithvi, Rakshasa in mrityu lok. Significance of these lies in the fact that the personality and characteristics of a person lie in the ganas they have.
It is easy to understand the classification, you can easily figure it out by the name of the Gana itself.
Let’s see:
- Dev Gana (manifesting satvik guna): The people who fall in this gana are humble by nature, generous and kind. These are the ones who follow traditions and give importance to morals and ethics.
People who are born with the moon in these nakshatras fall under this category: Ashwini, Mrigasira, Pushya, Swati, Hasta, Anuradha, Revati and Punarvasu.
- Manushya Gana (manifesting Rajasik guna): People of this gana have mixed qualities, for instance, they can be kind and vindictive. These people have both good and bad qualities.
People who are born with moon in these nakshatras fall under this category: Poorv-bhardpada, Uttara – ashada, Purva – ashada, Uttar – Phalguni, Poorva – Phalguni, Ardhra, Rohini and Bharni.
- Rakshasa Gana (manifesting tamasic guna): People from this gana tend to be envious, self-centred and aggressive. These are some of the toughest people to deal with. Though they can have strong intuitive powers.
People who are born with the moon in these nakshatras fall under this category: Kritika, Ashlesha, Magha, Dhanistha, Moola, Jyestha, Vishaka, Chitra.
Significance of Gana Checking:
It is conducted on the basis of Nakshatra at the time of birth of the boy and the girl and has the following implications for them:
Gana checking is crucial for laying the foundation of a successful marriage
As per Vedic astrology, if two persons belonging to the same Gana are married, it is considered a good confluence and the love and compatibility between them will be strong, indicating a good married life.
Recognising the Gana Dosha
Gana Dosha occurs when a couple shares the opposite nature and, therefore scores minimum points when it comes to compatibility. So, when one person is Rakshasha and another is Dev, it can be detrimental to a happy married life. It is a Mahadosha, like Nadi Dosha and Bhakoot.
It causes difficulties in marital life as the partner finds it difficult to adjust to another’s mental outlook. They will have different patterns of thinking, so it will create differences and conflicts between them.
Even in Hindu dharma texts, we have read that the Devatas and Rakshasas were always at odds with each other, never at peace.
Even marriage between Rakshasa and Manushya is not considered suitable. We have seen in tales that Rakshasa ends up eating the Manushya, so such a match can result in death or physical injury to the partner with Manushya Gana.
Rules for Gana Matching in Kundali Matching
- The bride and groom having the same birth nakshatra is said to have good Gana compatibility.
- If the groom’s moon occupies a Deva Gana Nakshatra and the bride’s moon occupies a Manav Gana Nakshatra, it is a good Gana compatibility.
- If the bride’s moon occupies a Deva Gana Nakshatra and the groom’s moon occupies a Manav Gana Nakshatra, the Gana compatibility is believed to be average.
- There is a complete incompatibility in Gana matching in the following cases:
- Rakshasa Gana Nakshatra Boy and Manushya Gana Nakshatra girl.
- Manushya Gana Nakshatra boy and Rakshasa Gana Nakshatra girl.
- Dev Gana Nakshatra boy and Rakshasa Gana Nakshatra girl.
- Rakshasa Gana Nakshatra boy and Dev Gana Nakshatra girl.
Performing remedial measures
Gana matching can help in identifying potential problems and their prevention.
For instance, the Gana Dosha can be nullified when the Navmansh lords of the groom and bride are friends, it also cancels out the Bhakoot Dosha. Also, strong bhakoot koota bonds between the bride and the groom can destroy the Gana Dosha. Besides, a strong bond between their rashis and the absence of Nadi Dosha will do the same. Chanting of remedial mantras can also help in getting rid of Gana Dosha’s effects. Consult a professional astrologer for astrological remedies.
Marriage is one of the most important decisions in a person’s life, you will be spending half or even more of your life with that person. So, you better do it the right way – after checking all the boxes.
