A new moon day in the Hindu calendar is called Amavasya. Since numerous rituals are only performed on Amavasya Tithi, it is a significant day in the Sanatan Hindu Calendar. Somvati Amavasya and Shani Amavasya are the names given to the Amavasyas that fall on weekdays Mondays and Saturdays, respectively.
It is appropriate to undertake Shraddha rites to please the dead on all Amavasya days. Kalasarpa Dosha puja can be performed on Amavasya Day as well. Amavasya can alternatively be written as Amavasai or spoken as Amavas.
