Mahadasha in Vedic Astrology!
Many of us who take an interest in Vedic astrology, have met someone with an astrological background or have met an astrologer for some astrological remedies may have heard about Mahadasha. Usually, people lack proper knowledge about Mahadasha and end up making wrong perceptions. Though it may sound a little harsh, its impact depends on many factors. However, the very common perception of people about Mahadasha is that it brings some ill news and mishaps, which is completely wrong.
So, let us try to understand what Mahadasha is. Mahadasha is a period ruled by one of the nine planets in the solar system for a certain time. This period comes into every individual’s life and it is a duration during which many fortunate events can take place in our lives.
How Many Years Does Mahadasha Span in Total?
The Mahadasha stretches 120 years in total, and these years are divided among all nine planets. Every Mahadasha has a different impact on every individual’s life. It depends on the nature of that planet in general. The impact of a planet is based on a particular planet’s position in your birth chart or horoscope. There could be many other factors that may influence the effects of the planets and among them is the Antardasha of the planets. So, there is not just one factor; multiple factors play a role in how your life will be influenced by a Mahadasha period.
Mahadasha and Antardasha
The nine Mahadasha durations are further divided into nine Antardashas. So, not just the main planet in Mahadasha but also the secondary planet associated with Antardasha is crucial to how Mahadasha affects us as individuals. The entire cycle of multiple Mahadashas and Antardashas throughout our lifespan can tell us about different life events and how our lives will turn out. Astrologers can also predict what good and bad we can expect to face.
These dasha’s are highly dependent on the placement of the moon because the moon is considered the initiation point in your life. Different yogas and doshas can be identified and rectified while you are in any Mahadasha. This is because every Dasha has a different impact and it is important to do a complete investigation before finding any remedial measures.
There are many types of Dasha systems but “Vimshottari Dasha” is one among the rest, which is the most famous and prominently used one. Under this dasha, the average lifespan of a human being, which was assumed to be 120 years during Vedic times, is split among nine.
What is the Duration of the 9 Mahadasha Period?
- Sun Mahadasha (Surya Mahadasha) : 6 years
- Venus Mahadasha (Shukra Mahadasha) : 20 years
- Saturn Mahadasha (Shani Mahadasha) : 19 years
- Moon Mahadasha (Chandra Mahadasha) : 10 years
- Jupiter Mahadasha (Guru Mahadasha): 16 years
- Ketu Mahadasha (Ketu Mahadasha) : 7 years
- Rahu Mahadasha (Rahu Mahadasha) : 18 years
- Mars Mahadasha (Mangal Mahadasha) : 7 years
- Mercury Mahadasha (Budh Mahadasha): 17 years
All the years add up to 120 years in total. There are another nine Antardashas. These are the extended versions of the Mahadasha. The Antardasha planets will influence the main planet, which either amplifies or decreases the effect of the planet depending on their power and placement.
What Do The Nine Planets Represent?
- Mars represents physical embodiment or ground
- Rahu denotes mischief and perplexity
- Jupiter stands for wealth, knowledge, power and spirituality
- Saturn is for hard work and judgements
- Mercury symbolises intelligence and knowledge
- Ketu has roots towards longevity, career and wealth
- Venus represents love, relationships, passion, and happiness
- The sun shows its radiance in the form of name, fame, authority, and aggression.
- The moon represents mental and emotional strength
These are the different types of Mahadasha that every individual has to go through in their lives. These Mahadashas can either make you or break you.
Mahadasha Effects in Your Life
The impact of Mahadashas is massive in our lives, as they play a vital role in our Kundali and the journey of our lives. Every event and every action in our lives depends on what Mahadasha is currently running and which Mahadasha we are going to enter next in our lives. The entire cycle of Mahadasha is based on our past life karma. So, during any Mahadasha, we may get rewarded or punished based on our past life deeds.
What dasha will come next in your life is determined by the moon. Just after you are born, you are born into one dasha, and depending on your birth chart, an individual can experience the good or bad effects of the dash in their lives. It is our natal chart and the position of the planets determines what kind of Mahadasha effects we may experience. The good and bad position of the ruling planet of the Mahadasha determines whether it will have a favourable or unfavourable effect on our lives. Also, in every Mahadasha, there are nine Antardasha, the effects of which can be experienced by individuals.
As per Vedic astrology, no dasha is completely good or completely bad. Every planet has good and bad impacts and each comes with something to offer. It is believed that the position of planets in our birth chart is based on our past karma. Everything about the position of the planets in our birth chart and Mahadashas is interrelated and the effects are not known to common people. Professional astrologers can make detailed analyses after reading your chart thoroughly. However, it depends on every individual and how they manage their lives during the Mahadasha period.
