Legend of the Dev Uthani Ekadashi
As per the texts, Bhagwan Vishnu used to stay awake for many years, dealing with his duty of defeating evil. This messed up his sleep, and he ended up sleeping for many years unexpectedly. This irregular sleeping pattern bothered his wife, Devi Lakshmi. She asked him to fix it so she could get some rest. Bhagwan Vishnu realised he was troubling Devi Lakshmi and other gods. He decided that the time when the world ends, known as ‘Pralaya Kaleen,’ would be his deep sleep or ‘Maha Nindra.’ The four months he takes a shorter nap would be ‘Alpa Nindra,’ and it would be exceptional for his followers. He said that devotees who serve him during this time, organising festivities for his awakening, will have Bhagwan Vishnu bless their homes.
Therefore, he chose to sleep for four months every year during the rainy season. It is believed that the divine deity starts sleeping, known as ‘Yoga Nidra,’ on Dev Shayani Ekadashi in the month of Ashadh (around June and July) and wakes up on Devutthana Ekadashi.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is Tulsi Vivah?
A: Devutthana Ekadashi marks the significant practice of Tulsi Vivah, where a marriage ceremony between the Tulsi plant and Bhagwan Vishnu in his Shaligram form is celebrated. This custom is rooted in the belief that the Tulsi sapling is a reincarnation of Vrinda, a devoted woman to Lord Vishnu. Tulsi Vivah, invoking Lord Vishnu through the Tulsi plant, is considered crucial. Worshipping Tulsi and Shaligram on this day with complete rituals are believed to fulfill wishes, eliminate suffering, and remove obstacles in married life. Scriptures suggest that couples without daughters can perform ‘Kanyadaan’ by participating in Tulsi’s marriage.
