Significance of Sookshma Dasha and Pran Dasha in Vedic Astrology

Astrology is as complex as it is fascinating. What most people know is only about their zodiacs and ruling planets. Of course, they are the most important aspects of astrology for one to know. But they are not all there is to know. In astrology, most of us have heard about Dasha. We understand that some bring good results, while others do not. For instance, most people fear the wrath of Rahu Dasha and so on. However, Dashas are more than that. They are complicated in themselves but can be understood. Here, we will tell you about two of these Dashas: Sookshma and Pran (Pranantar). First, let us tell you a bit more about Dasha itself.
What is Dasha in Astrology?
Dashas are planetary periods and hold an important place in astrology, influencing incidents and situations in a person’s life. They reflect the effects that various planets have on individuals’ experiences. They are like the background on which everything is taking place. However, they have a role to play beyond that. Let us tell you that by explaining two Dashas.

What is Sookshma Dasha?
Sookshma dashas are short periods that last for just a week. They have been prevalent on all nine planets under Pratyantar Dasha for days.
What is Pran Dasha?

What is The Relationship Between Different Dashas?
Here, we will discuss the relationship between Mahadasha, Antardasha, Pratyantar Dasha, Sookshma Dasha, and Pran Dasha. Let us try to understand how all these Dashas are related and what makes them different:
- Mahadasha lasts for many years, typically 6 to 20 years. This is the longest planetary period in an individual’s life span. All nine planets have their own Mahadasha and each one has a different time span in an individual’s life as per their birth chart. The planetary period of all nine planets put together is 120 years, which is believed to be the assumed lifespan of an individual; however, everyone does not live for so long. Keeping the mahadasha time span of 120 years in mind for all nine planets, it is quite understandable that rarely does an individual get to live their entire life of 120 years and experience the mahadasha of all nine planets. The Mahadasha of a planet has a massive impact on an individual’s life.
- Antardasha lasts for about 1 to 3 years and is the sub-period of Mahadasha on every planet. Every Mahadasha has Antardasha of all nine planets in its entire period. Antardasha plays a significant role in a native’s life. Though Antardasha follows the order of Mahadasha, for a favourable event in a native’s life, both Mahadasha and Antardasha have to be favourable for an individual.
- Pratyantar dasha lasts for about 1 to 5 months. Pratyantar Dash is the sub-sub-period of Mahadasha and is under Antardasha. It follows the command of Antardasha. For day-to-day activities, Pratyantar Dasha has to be checked.
- Sookshmadasha lasts for about 5 to 25 days.
- Pran dasha lasts only for a few hours.
Therefore, Pratyantardasha and Sookshmadasha are the most important for understanding the current state (Dasha) of your life and finding out the exact timing of events.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Which Dasha is good in astrology?
A: The quality of the Dasha will depend on the strength and nature of the related planet. The influence of all nine planets during their respective periods can significantly shape events and experiences in a person’s life, based on their position in your birth chart. If they are favourable, they will give favourable results, and if they are unfavourable, they will give unfavourable results.
Q: Does Saturn Mahadasha give bad results?
A: Not always and not for everyone. It is not necessary that if Saturn is cruel to one person, it will be cruel to others too. It can give good results to natives with a positive placement of Saturn in their birth chart. Basically, it depends on how positively or negatively it is positioned in the birth chart. However, there are many other factors that need to be considered.
Q: Is Rahu Mahadasha always bad?
A: Not necessarily! It can bring good results as well, if it is favourably placed in your birth chart. However, there are many other factors that need to be considered.
