Shattila Ekadashi: Significance, Time and Rituals!

Shatila Ekadashi falls on the Ekadashi (eleventh day) of the Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Magha. It is one of the most auspicious days, according to the Sanatan Hindu calendar. Hindus observe the Shatila Ekadashi Vrat (fast) and worship Bhagwan Shri Hari Vishnu in an attempt to please him and seek his blessings for themselves and their family members. The Significance of Shattila Ekadashi Vrat

It is believed that if one worships Bhagwan Vishnu on this day with a pure and devoted mind and good humane purposes, he shall have all his wishes fulfilled by Bhagwan Vishnu. It is also believed that if you observe this fast, it will be equal to the Punya of Kanyadan (which is believed to be a virtuous deed by Hindus). Role of Sesame in Shattila Ekadashi
The name Shattila comes from Til or Tila (sesame), which is Shat- Tila Ekadashi. This Shattila Ekadashi is associated with Tila (sesame). Til, as per Sanatan Hindus, is a very sacred seed and is one of the main ingredients used for havan and pooja in various Hindu festivals and rituals. As per traditional rituals, devotees can use tila (sesame seeds) in six ways on Shat Tila Ekadashi 2024 to make their vrat and rituals successful.
- Take bath with sesame water (Tila water).
- Use “ubatan” (paste) of sesame seeds.
- Use sesame seeds in pooja.

Rituals of Ekadashi (Vrat) Fasting
The Ekadashi vrat rituals begin on the night of Dashami (the tenth day of Magha month). Here are some of the rituals that you can follow on the day of Shattila Ekadashi if you want to observe the Shattila Ekadashi vrat.
- Do not consume food after the sunset of Dashmi.
- According to Narad Puran, devotees should wake up early in the morning to start the day with a pure mind.
- Then take a bath with sesame seed water after finishing their daily routine activities. People can also apply ubtan of sesame seeds before taking bath.
- After taking a bath, engage in meditation. You should worship Bhagwan Vishnu and take a vow of fasting.
- If you have a picture or an idol of Shri Hari Vishnu in your temple, you can worship there. If you do not have any pictures or idols of Shri Hari Vishnu, you can place one.
- Now, sprinkle sesame water mixed with Gangajal drops on the idol and your surroundings. Then bathe the idol with panchamrit. Make sure panchamrit contains sesame seeds.
- Next is Ghatasthapana, and then light a ghee lamp and some incense sticks and offer flowers and sweets to the deity with sesame seeds. You can also offer sweets made of sesame seeds.
- Now, you can chant Vishnu Sahastranama and perform a pooja. If you have any confusion, you can always consult your local Pandit.
- Perform Vishnu Aarti in front of Shri Hari Vishnu’s idol in the home temple.
- Devotees also donate sesame seeds, as it is believed to be among the most important deeds on this very auspicious day. People believe one gets to stay in heaven for as many days as the number of sesame seeds they donate.
