One of them is Rahu Kaal. Rahu Kaal is also known as Rahu Kalam, Rahu Kalu and Rahu Kalaam.
In Vedic astrology, Rahu Kaal has its own importance. However, before coming to that, let’s get to know the planet Rahu first.
Understand the Notorious Rahu FirstRahu is often represented as a peculiar figure. It’s described as having the head of a human and the body of a serpent. This unique form is associated with its role in causing eclipses, particularly when it covers the Sun. In depictions, Rahu can be seen riding a chariot pulled by eight black horses.
Astrologically, Rahu and Ketu are the most fearsome planets. Planet Rahu governs our mental state, ego and aggression. When paired with Mars, it can be unfavourable and bring drastic results for the native. It controls the tamasic traits of a person like gambling among others.
However, always keep in mind, that no planet is inherently good or bad. It’s all our karmas, which determine their positions and ultimately our destinies. Even a rightly placed Rahu can bestow on you the riches of the world. It can lead to wisdom and spiritual enlightment. But, not at the time of Rahu Kaal.
What is Rahu Kaal?
Rahu Kaal occurs every day, at a specific time. It is considered inauspicious for starting of new things and endeavours. Between sunrise and sunset, it occurs for a duration of 90 minutes.
History Behind Rahu Kaal
During the Amrit Manthan, there was a dispute between the Devas (gods) and Danavs (demons) over who would get it first. To stop the conflict, Lord Dhanvantari appeared with the Amritkalash (pot of nectar) and prayed to Lord Vishnu for help.
Lord Vishnu then took the form of an apsara named Mohini to distract the demons. Rahu, one of the demons, cleverly disguised himself as a god and drank some of the nectar. However, the Surya and Chandra recognised him, and Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to cut off Rahu’s head.
Even though Rahu’s head was cut, he became immortal because a few drops of the Amrit had already gone down his throat. The time when Rahu’s head was severed is called ‘Rahu Kaal.’
Also, there is scientific backing for avoiding activities during Rahu Kaal as well. According to ancient wisdom and observations, Rahu Kalam is the time of day when the human body is exposed to the highest levels of harmful Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the Sun.
In the past, when people travelled by carts or on foot, being exposed to the Sun’s radiation during Rahu Kal was considered harmful. Therefore, wise individuals recommend that people begin any important activities, especially travel, well before or after the Rahu Kal to avoid the adverse effects of being exposed to this radiation.
