What is the Legend Behind Worshipping Maa Kaalratri?
Once, there was an Asur named Rakhtbeej. He was causing chaos to gods as well as humans. He was given a boon that from every drop that fell from his body, another Asur would be born. All the gods looked up to Maa Durga to defeat the Asur. Maa Durga took the form of Kaalratri. As soon as Rakhtbeej saw Maa Durga in her Kaalratri roop, he got frightened and ran for his life. However, he was caught by Maa who then drank every drop of his blood with her tongue, to prevent him from taking a rebirth. On the 7th day of Navratri, Maa’s triumph over Rakhtbeej is celebrated.
There is another story associated with Maa Kaalratri. During Amrit Manthan, when the deadly poison emerged, it was destroying the entire universe. To save the world, Bhagwan Shiva drank it, and because of the poison, his throat turned blue. To ease his pain, Maa Parvati took the form of Kaalratri and entered his throat. The intense heat and the burning sensation of the poison turned her complexation dark. That is why she is known as Kaalratri. She absorbed the poison and brought the world to life.
