Once upon a time, there lived a rishi called Katyayan, a great bhakt of Devi Shakti. It was his greatest desire to have Devi Shakti born as his daughter.
In another kingdom, Raja Rambha, who was the king of the Asuras, became infatuated with the princess Mahishi. The princess was cursed to be a buffalo. Because of their union, Mahishasura was born who was able to exist in the form of a buffalo as well as an asura.
Mahishasura did penance to please Bhagwan Brahma. And he obtained the boon that no animal or man could kill him. Then, he went on a rampage causing chaos. Desperately, devtas sought the help of Trinity. The trinities – Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh concentrated all their powers on Devi Shakti and thus Katyayani took the form. She was born as a daughter of Rishi Katyayan and thus named Katyayani. She grew on to become a beautiful woman. Mahishasura wanted to marry her, so he sent her a proposal through his guards. Devi Katyayani laughed at the proposal and said that if Mahishasura could defeat her in battle then she would marry him.
