What is the Legend Behind Worshipping Maa Brahmacharini?
Devi Brahmacharini was an incarnation of Maa Durga. She is honoured on the 2nd day of the nine-day Navratri festival. After giving up her life as Sati, Devi Parvati was reborn in the Himalayas and became known as Brahmacharini.
The name Brahmacharini comes from “Brahm,” meaning austerity or penance, and “Charini,” meaning a devoted female worshipper. When rishi Narada visited her, she asked how she could marry Bhagwan Shiva again. He told her she needed to perform severe penance.
Determined to marry Shiva, Devi Parvati undertook intense penance for thousands of years. For the first thousand years, she ate only fruits and flowers; for the next thousand, only vegetables; and for three thousand years, only dried leaves. Eventually, she stopped eating altogether, focusing solely on her penance, which made her very weak.
When her mother visited her and saw her condition, she cried out, “Oh! Ma!” Because of this, Devi Parvati is also called Uma. After she stopped eating leaves, she earned the name Aparna, meaning one who lives without leaves.
Seeing her dedication, Bhagwan Brahma blessed her, saying that Bhagwan Shiva was pleased with her penance and that they would marry in this life.
