Story Behind Celebration of Bhai Dooj
Once upon a time, Surya married Samjna (Sangya), a beautiful princess. Within a year, they had twins—Yama and Varni or Yamuna. They grew up together. However, Samjna, after some time, was unable to bear the brilliance of her husband and so decided to go back to earth. However, she left Chaya, her shadow, behind so that Surya would think she was still there.
Chaya was a very cruel stepmother to the twins. She gave birth to her own twins and convinced Surya to remove Yama and Vani from heaven. Yama went to hell and became the Lord of Death. Vani, on the other hand, fell to Earth and became the river Yamuna.
After several years had passed, Vani married a prince and was quite content with her life. However, she missed her brother and wanted to see him. Yama missed his sister as well and decided to visit her. Varni was so happy with the news of her brother’s coming that she prepared a feast in his honour. It was two days into Deepavali; she decorated her place as well. She prepared the food with all her heart.
The siblings spend a very good time with each other. When the time came for Yama to leave, he said to his sister, “Dear Varni, you have welcomed me so lovingly. But I did not bring you a gift. Ask, therefore, for something and it will be yours.”
Varni replied that his visit was enough and that she did not need anything else. However, Yama was persistent. So he insisted.
“Okay,” agreed Varni, taking a moment to think. “I ask that all brothers should remember their sisters on this day and visit them if they can, and that, on this day, all sisters should pray for the happiness of their brothers.”
