What is the Legend Behind Worshipping Maa Chandraghanta?
As per the texts, an Asur named Mahishasura gained the power of invincibility from Bhagwan Brahma through tapasya. After receiving this boon, he became arrogant and started hurting both gods and humans. The gods, feeling helpless, turned to the Tridev—Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva—for help.
The three gods combined their powers to create a warrior goddess named Durga, who was given divine abilities and weapons. Durga fought Mahishasura for nine days and nights. On the 3rd day of the battle, she took the form of Goddess Chandraghanta. She had a half-moon-shaped bell on her forehead that made a loud, terrifying sound, frightening Mahishasura’s armies.
Angered by the sound, Mahishasura sent his strongest demon, Raktabeej, to fight her. However, Goddess Chandraghanta easily defeated Raktabeej with her weapons and powers. After this victory, she continued to battle Mahishasura and ultimately defeated him on the ninth day. This victory represents the triumph of good over evil and the restoration of peace and prosperity.
