Significance of Radha Kund Snan
Holy bathing in Radha Kund is believed to be very auspicious and thought to have therapeutic properties. This holy deep is recommended to couples troubled trying to conceive. As per Sanatan Hindu scriptures, on the auspicious day of Ahoi Ashtami, if childless couples take a dip and swim in the holy water of Radha Kund, it can help them conceive a child. The pair also has to observe a Nirjala Vrat on this day along with a holy dip in the Radha Kund.
Radha Kund (राधा कुंड) is in the North West part of Vraja (near Vrindavana). Devotees of Devi Radha recognise this Kunda as the lake of Radharani. It is considered one of the most auspicious and holy places by Sanatan Hindus. It is located by the Parikrama road, very close to the Govardhan hill (which was lifted by Bhagwan Krishna on his little finger). Many stories are linked to the creation of both the Shyama Kund and Radha Kund, which are adjacent to each other. Devotees say, that both the holy ponds, Shyama Kund and Radha Kund look like the eyes of the peacock.
The place is visited by thousands of couples who are struggling to conceive on this Ahoi Ashtami day, which is considered very auspicious by Hindus. The most auspicious and appropriate time for performing the ritual is Nishita kaal or midnight time. Therefore, the ritual starts at midnight and lasts until morning.
Story Behind the Radha Kund Snan
Radha Kund was formed after Shri Krishna Bhagwan killed Aristasura, a demon in the form of a bull. According to Sanatan Hindu scriptures, the bull is venerated as a symbol of dharma and it belongs to the cow family. The reason, Radharani and the Gopis saw it as a sin and felt Bhagwan Krishna by killing the bull had committed a dharmic sin. Radharan then asked Shri Krishna to do penance by taking holy baths in all the sacred rivers to purify himself.
Following Radharani’s advice and making her happy, Lord Krishna brought water from all the holy places of the country to one place. Bhagwan Krishan hit the ground forcefully with his lotus feet and immediately the waters from all the holy rivers and places collected at that one spot and that spot is popularly known as Shyam Kund today. The Shyama Kunda is one of the most sacred spots for Hindu devotees visiting Vrindavan. After this, Radharani also created another Kund just adjacent to the Shyam Kunda. She dug into the ground close by Shyam Kund with her bangles. At this point, all the sacred rivers requested Radha ji to allow them to flow into the Kund created by her. And this way Radha Kund came into existence. On the banks of Radha Kunda, you will find a total of eight Kunjas that are dedicated to the eight principal Sakhis of Radha Rani.
Festival Offerings and Rituals
If devotees perform a ritualistic snan in the Radha Kund on the auspicious day of Ahoi Ashtami, it is considered very sacred and beneficial. Devotees come here to pumpkins, fruits, garlands and prasad to the sacred pond Radha Kund. After taking a holy dip in the Radha Kund at midnight, they take another holy dip in the Shyama Kund.
