How Many Points Should Match in a Kundali for Marriage According to Vedic Astrology

We often hear about horoscope matching or Janam Patri Milan or Kundali Milan. What is that? Why does Vedic Hindu astrology advise people to follow these? The reason is points matching between the prospective bride and the prospective groom for the sole purpose of predicting whether the marriage between them will be blissful or not.
Therefore, when it comes to marriage, we just can’t take the second step before points matching, also known as Guna Milan. Not only is this the most important aspect of the relationship, but it is also the interesting and worrying part too, for couples and their families if the points are not favourable. After all, if everything goes well, marriage happens only once in a lifetime, so better do it in all the correct ways.
Here we will provide you with the answer to this most pressing of all questions, i.e., ‘How many points should match in the Kundali for marriage?’ Or ‘how many Gunas should match for marriage?’
How Many Gunas Should Match for Marriage?
The Gunas matching is done on the basis of the Janam Kundali or Janam Patri, as per the position of the moon in Ashtakoot Milan. Asht means “eight” and Koot means “aspects”. They are:
Varna/Varan/Jaati (1 point)
This stands for the level of ego and spiritual harmony between the people. Further, it is divided into Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras. The groom’s varna must be at least one point higher than the prospective bride’s to get a good score. Otherwise, their varna is incompatible.
Vashya/Vasya (2 points)
This represents the symbiotic attraction and power that one person has over the other. It tells about the power equation between them. Here, the further classification includes humans, Vanchar or wild animals, Chatushpad or small animals, Jalchar or waterborne animals and Keet or insects.
When both belong to the same Vasya, the score is 2, when both belong to the opposite Vasya, the score is 0, a score of 12 for humans and water-borne animals, and for the rest of the combinations, the score is 1.
Tara (3 points):
This has to do with people’s longevity compatibility as well as their health and well-being. This is the compatibility of birth stars. Here, the score is obtained for the prospective bride and groom.
When counting the stars of the bride, it is done from that of the groom, then dividing the resultant number by nine. In a similar procedure, counting is done for the groom. A perfect compatibility score of 3 is reached when the remainder of both are even; 1.5 points if one of them is odd; 0 if both are odd.
Yoni (4 points):
This denotes the individuals’ animal instincts and sexual compatibility. Here further classification is done into horse, Sheep, Dog, Rat, Cow, Buffalo, Hare or Deer, Lion, Elephant, Snake, Cat, Tiger, Monkey and Mongoose.
When both belong to the same category, a perfect score of 4 is achieved. When they belong to enemy animals, they get 0 points; when they belong to friendly animal categories, they will get 3 points; and they will get a score of 1 point when they belong to non-friendly animal categories. Ultimately, if they belong to animal categories that are neutral towards each other, they will get 2 points.
Graha Maitri (5 points):
This determines whether the Moon signs of the people are kind to one another and compatible. It is the compatibility of love.
In case the position of the groom’s moon is second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth places from that of the bride, it will give a match that is not so good. A suitable match is indicated by positions 12 and 7.
Also, when the position of the moon of the bride is 12 degrees from that of the groom, the match is poor. However, if it is second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh, it will be considered very good.
Gana (6 points):
This represents temperament and behavioural compatibility. The three Ganas are Devas or Gods, Manav or humans, and Rakshasa or Demons.
On having the same Gana, 3 points are given. When one is Raksha Gana and the other is Deva, a point is given. Zero points are given when one belongs to Raksha and the other to Manav.
Bhakoota (7 points):
This takes into account a person’s emotional compatibility and the well-being of their family. Bhakoot is also known as “Rasi Adhipati” or “Rashyadipati”. Here, the Gurus of zodiac houses can be friendly, enemy, or neutral.
When both the lords are friendly, 5 points are given; if one is friendly and the other is neutral, 4 points are given; and 0 points are given when they are enemies.
Nadi (8 points):
This pertains to people’s health, genetic compatibility and chances of having children. There are 3 Nadis: Aadi Nadi which represents the Vaata or air element, 2nd Nadi is Madhya Nadi which is the representation of the Pitta or fire element and the 3rd Nadi is Antya Nadi which is the representation of the Kapha or Water element.
Here, for having the same Nadis, no points are given. On the other hand, for having opposite Nadis, 8 points are awarded.
Under each of the above categories, guidelines are given for horoscope matching. Scores are noted for compatibility. After consolidating scores from all categories, a final score is reached.
As per Vedic astrology, the following interpretations are given for marriage:
- 36 is considered the perfect and best Nakshatra point. But it is almost impossible to score that by matching Nakshatra and Rashi.
- 23 to 32 is considered very good. And the prospects are high for the pair to have a happy marriage.
- It is excellent when the score is in the range of 23–25. It is considered very good, and the prospects of such a pair getting happiness are very good.
- A score in the range of 18 to 22 is moderate.
- However, a score below 18 is highly incompatible. It is not advised, as per astrology, to pair such a bride and groom.
