First, you need to get up early and clean yourself. Take a vow to observe a fast on this day. Then, wash the idol of Bhagwan Vishnu, if possible, with Ganga Jal. Next, offer Chandan, abir, gulal, unbroken rice or Akshat, moli, and flowers in the puja. Next, perform the aarti.

Once there was a king named Indrasen, who was the ruler of Mahismati. He was a religious man and worshipped Bhagwan Vishnu. He was a very kind and dedicated king and the kingdom was prosperous under his rule. One day as he was presiding in the assembly, Narad Muni came to his court. He was treated well by the king who also enquired about the reason for his visit.
On that, Narad Muni replied that while the kingdom was prosperous under the king, the king’s own father was suffering in Yamalok because of the bad karmas of his previous life. So, he requested Narad Muni to tell his son this and also observe the Indira Ekadashi fast during Krishna Paksha of Ashwini month to free him. On this, King Indrasen asked Narad Muni about Indira Ekadashi and how to observe it.
The latter informed him that he must observe the Indira Ekadashi with complete dedication from Dashami Tithi. He should avoid any kind of indulgence and also take a dip in holy waters. He also needs to worship his ancestors on this day.
After listening to this, King Indrasen observed the fast along with his family members. Due to that, his father obtained a place in heaven as well. King Indrasen also got positive outcome from observing Indira Ekadashi and was able to rule his kingdom peacefully.
